Six months into a post Covid world and there’s one thing that we know for sure….

EVERYTHING has changed!

Entrepreneurial businesses are closing in droves.  Millions of people each month are filing for unemployment benefits.  (More than anytime in the history of the program!) 

People are working from home and not going out to shop or for entertainment.

Imagine this for a moment…

You walk up to a building that has a roof that’s falling in.  The paint is peeling off the walls, and when you open the door a musty smell of mildew and wood rot hit you in the nose.  

As you walk in, you realize that you need to be careful where you step because the floor is collapsing and you may easily fall through it.

Recently, I was talking to a high profile client in Kennedy world about database marketing, segmentation and data buckets, and I said 'You know how PRISM works right?' and INSTANTLY he said, 'YES, YES, I want to run my data through your data prism'. Soon the conversation turned in to a project and I am working on dissecting his list(s) in to multiple slices to create segments and sub-segments of data.

You might say the first thing it needs is a powerful motor and a strong, resilient transmission and drivetrain.  

Then you might say it needs to be aerodynamic, have a low center of gravity, and a stiff suspension so we can reduce wind drag and help corner the track at higher speed

The world is changing at light speed, still.  It’s been 5 months since the stock market crashed because of Covid.  

Pandemic declared, a national emergency, commerce shut down, businesses closing for ever, mask wearing mandates…

The whole world has changed and it will not go back.  Not anytime soon anyway.  

We are facing a very difficult time in the next 5 years.  With the Fed printing money at light speed, we run the risk of massive price inflation without corresponding economic expansion.

Pandemic! Riots! Fear! Panic!

Everybody welcomes the convincing Mystic. People so desperately wish to Believe that there is a long lost, ancient or a revolutionary new Something. A cure, an elixir, a formula for easy riches or happy relationships or better sex or well behaved children  or growing 12 foot high tomato plants; a gizmo that turns garbage into fuel or tree bark into gold doubloons; an Answer Man, Seer, Keeper of Secrets. And in dark times, this desire intensifies. In dark times even kings subjugate themselves to the Mystics - which you know if you've studied history. People really don't want rational explanations for how you do what you do, they prefer Believing that you possess Mystical Powers and Magical Secrets that you will use for their benefit. To underestimate the power of secrets and secret powers is to ignore how humanity has been manipulated, controlled and ruled since its beginnings.

Why does so much panic spread so quickly and easily through so many people whenever tough times occur in a given industry or profession, or the national economy?

 

Without deep roots, a tree topples in the storm. What are 'deep roots' for the business owner, entrepreneur or sales professional?

 

One: a system of selling and conducting business that has proven reliable and profitable, from which he can draw confidence, and which he can stick to with reasoned persistence. If he is advertising and marketing to attract customers, selling to them, retaining and multiplying them without a system, by random and erratic and even impulsive acts, with unplanned and disorganized effort, he'll be blown off course by a stiff breeze.
