Social Media is quickly beginning to dominate the internet landscape. A Pew Internet survey found that 65 percent of Internet users in the U.S. used social networking sites, up from 61 percent the previous year, and that the majority use these sites at least once per day. If your website is not plugged into social media, you will be missing out on the lion’s share of your potential visitors. So, how do you determine if your website is “social”? Ask yourself the following questions.

Does my website use social sharing buttons?

These buttons, which are easy to incorporate into a webpage, allow your visitors to quickly and easily share with their social circle pages that they find interesting about your site. Think of them like bookmarks that all of their friends can see. At the minimum, you should include social sharing buttons for Facebook, Twitter, Google +, and e-mail (yes, e-mail!). Also, if your site falls into certain categories, you should include buttons for the major social networks in these categories. For example, if your site uses a lot of images or interesting artwork, a Pintrest button would be good. If your site is business oriented, consider a LinkedIn button.

In addition, most of these buttons have options to display the number of times that these buttons have been used. This allows visitors to quickly see content that other visitors have enjoyed.

Are the Social Networks I belong to incorporated into my website?

This one is simple. If your website or business has a Facebook page, is there a way for users to Like you on Facebook or visit your Facebook page from your main website. If your company Tweets, is there an easy way for your visitors to follow you on twitter? Can they +1 your Google Plus account? Don’t forget that these linked social networks are great for your overall SEO strategy.

You could even go the extra mile and incorporate widgets from the various social networks on your page. This could, for example, display your last four Tweets, or Facebook Posts, or show your Google Calendar. That way, not only does the content of your site continually update, but your visitors get a quick snapshot of the things you offer on your social sites.

Does your website make life easy for social network users?

This can sometimes be the hardest one to define, but the most common sense to implement. A good example would be: If your website uses user accounts, do they have the option of logging into your website using their Facebook or Twitter account information? If you use commenting functions, are these comments tied to Facebook or other social networks (a bonus would be if the comments appeared on your Facebook page, as well).Take a good look at your website and see if any of the functions you already offer can be tied into various social media. Often a Google search will turn up ideas for this that you haven’t even thought of.

If you can answer “Yes” to all three questions, congratulations, you have a “social” website, and are well on your way to internet dominance!
