Would you trust someone if they tell you that they never made a mistake? Me neither. All personal and professional growth is tied to making mistakes, overcoming the consequences, and learning from failure. With that in mind, here are some things to keep in mind to help you learn.

Be clear in your subject line and call to action in your marketing.

It is not easy producing material that will be looked at by hundreds or thousands of customers. There is even more pressure when the message that you sent out has a spelling mistake or a technical hiccup. One of the most basic mistakes is to mess up an important part of the marketing email in your CRM.

I messed it up once sending an email with a “Contact First. Name” instead of the contact’s actual name. Yep, that is not too good.

What are the lessons that I learned by making this mistake? Do not be afraid of your client’s feedback and always be open to the dialogue. Instead of waves of cringe and hate, I only received support from the members of this email newsletter. Your clients are usually fine with you making a mistake like this from time to time – everyone understands that you are a human and can’t be perfect all the time.

Don't rely too much on social media for new prospects.

It is way too easy to fall into the pit that is social media ‘marketing’. Some use it for incorrectly in their marketing. This is a mistake that inexperienced business owners are making too often by pumping money into Facebook and Instagram ads that have little to no conversion rates. They are using the “spray and pray” method to see if they can attract enough business. Ads must be targeted to your specific avatar while Posts are for current clients to keep you top of mind.

While I was caught in the same vicious circle at the beginning of the social media era, I learned that the best way to check if the marketing campaign is effective is to consult the KPI’s. Data is the only way to determine effective marketing!

TEST, TEST, TEST. Experiment with the content and format of your marketing materials, the time of day or day of week of when they are distributed, and the call to action. Do these ONE AT A TIME so you can use the data to find out which changes are effective.

Switch your marketing approach and never stop learning new things! Your clients are not in a bubble, so their preferences in year one may be very different into year five of your relationship.

Although it is important to have a unique voice, it is crucial to be able to change as needed.

Having been a marketer for a long time, I have had my share of mistakes. If you'd like to save yourself a few and learn from mine, feel free to reach out.
