Marketing Versus Sales

When I first came to America, I was shocked at the cultural differences.

Everything was different from attitudes to the way people interacted with each other in daily life, even how they shopped. But the most interesting thing to me was how businesses marketed and sold their products and services. India – like much of the third world - has little marketing. Business owners in third-world countries focus on sales and negotiating. Mostly, this is because people in third world countries buy products and services they need. Conversely, in America people buy what they WANT.

This is why the best marketers in the English-speaking world come from America.

America is where all the consumers are. And until recently, with the economy humming along nicely, you didn't even have to be a particularly good marketer to sell your product or services. But times are changing... Inflation is up. Interest rates are up. The economy is slowing. People are getting more cautious about the products and services they are buying and that translates to slower sales volume - particularly if you are a poor or mediocre marketer. Second, read the book and use a highlighter to mark the items throughout the book that you need to add or improve in the MARKETING aspects of your business.

Third, go through the book a second time, listing each marketing improvement item you highlighted at the top of a page inside a notebook. Only add one item per page. Next, decide which item - if you could implement it immediately - would make the biggest difference in your business. this is the item you are going to work on first. Break it down into smaller pieces that can be done without delay. Schedule time to tackle each smaller piece and before you know it, the main item at the top of that page will be completed. When a page is complete, make sure you take the time to celebrate. This is an essential part of accelerating your progress. 

This is not the only way, but it is the fastest. Most businesses wallow around attempting to optimize their marketing processes for YEARS before they make any real headway. You cannot afford to do this anymore. The headwinds that businesses will face in the next 2 to 3 years won't just be difficult they will be severe. Inaction could be fatal.

But if you use the book and take action and you will find yourself and your business in the "lucky" 20% of businesses that not only make it through the recession - but actually THRIVE. A strong marketing message will allow you to dominate your competitors and leave them wondering what happened. (This reminds me of one of my favorite American cartoon characters - Wile E. Coyote when something blows up in his face and he stands there with his smoldering face blinking and trying to figure out what just happened. You do not want this to be you!)
