My mom was the assistant director of agriculture for the State of Gujarat before we came to America. During my childhood, I went on plant tours of Amul Dairy in Anand, Gujarat, several times. The massive mountain of butter, about three stories tall, waiting to be packaged in to different size of cardboard boxes was quite a sight. Today, I want to talk about the utterly, butterly Amul girl. This animated character has been in India’s marketing landscape for several generations. This fictitious character made Amul butter more famous in India than the ‘Got Milk’ campaign in America. You can view Amul’s animated ads from 1976 time frame on Amul’s web site here.

Throughout all her years, this animated girl has taken part in the Indian consumer’s voice and become the fun part of the Indian advertising arena. Animated characters in advertising is not a new phenomenon in America. Would you ever want to do business with an Insurance company that was started to do business with government employees? Who knew, you could actually buy car insurance from Government Employees Insurance Company and a fifteen minute phone call could save you fifteen percent or more. Thanks to an Australian reptile, Geico insurance is a household name. The question is... can you have an animated character represent you? Can you draw your own future with your own hands or the hands of an online animator? Can a software like Videoscribe from Sparkol bring animation and fun to your business?

I have seen Dan Kennedy in person at least a dozen times.

He looks awesome in person, and when you talk to him one on one, he will engage in some humor filled small talk that will lead up to a life changing lesson. I have seen him wearing a suite, a pair of jeans, cowboy boots, leather jacket... you name it! However, when I close my eyes and think of Dan Kennedy, the only image that comes in front of me is a hand drawn character sitting on a bull. At a super conference last year, Vince had a picture of Dan, all framed up that had the caption: ‘My way IS the highway’!

So, who should represent your company? Should someone even represent your company? When is it appropriate to have a cartoon character?

These are lots of good questions which deserve good answers. Not all companies would do well with a cute cartoon on every paper, store, or pen. Take a law firm for an example. Imagine you are a customer choosing between two firms to represent you. One firm's website opened up to a bubbly animal welcoming you to the firm. The other was professional and had a more serious tone. Legal work is serious. Obviously, you would chose the professional website. The cartoon must match the profession. This is not to say that a law firm should not have a logo or a slogan but the images should inspire confidence in the company's ability to take care of you and the work you need to get done. On the other hand, if you are selling bubbles to kids, a cute cartoon would be perfect in helping your sales.
